At a glanceMilla Says is a cross-platform social network with a noble aim of providing a communication channel for children and adults with hearing impairment, Down syndrome, and other specific language difficulties. It was developed as a web based system to display and share signs used for communication—thereby supporting general language development. Through the digital network it aims to connect the child or adult and his/her close network to cooperate on the training and usage of signs in their everyday life.
ChallengeEnd user expectations were not met by their existing implementation using NativeScript. The third party chat plugin used, ran into unresolved issues and delayed delivery. This version of the app could not serve its primary purpose of uploading images and videos of signs. Since NativeScript is a plugin dependent ecosystem, there were compatibility issues while upgrading from Nativescript 4 to 5.
ResultBy using NativeScript we simultaneously deployed the Android and iOS app which resulted in 30% cost reduction compared to native Android and iOS deployments. We were able to achieve a 40% increase in the app performance and also reduced the app size from 40 MB to 28 MB. The architected solution made code reuse over the web possible, further reducing cost and time of development. The end product saw an increase in app activity by 42%.
